Creating A Bright Future For Next Generation Electricians

It is not every day that we get to be involved in a project that is going to help grow and develop the next generation of electricians.

So, when the opportunity arose to work on MIT’s new Techpark facility, we knew it was a challenge we were going to grab with both hands!

MIT had the plan to relocate their engineering and trade skill departments from the existing Otara location to the brand new Techpark facility in Manukau. They needed a team of electrical experts to complete the design, build and fitout of all electrical components.

Naturally, they turned to DGE for help.

The Challenge

To Supply and install every electrical aspect for a new purpose built trades facility

When creating a purpose built facility for engineering and trade skills to be fostered, you want every element to be perfect! After all, we were helping to create a facility for the next generation of electrical experts to learn in.

The responsibility was a big one! But, it was one that was very close to our hearts, so we embraced the challenge of creating a modern, high quality learning facility.

The Scope Of The Job

Complete base build, electrical work and fitout for the new Techpark learning facility

In a huge, purpose built facility designed to teach the technical aspects of a range of trades, there was a lot of work to get done. DGE were responsible for the base build, electrical installation and electrical fitout of a huge warehouse and office space.

That included the installation of numerous switchboards, a lot of three phase power, single phase power and lighting controls, as well as the installation of all data networking and fibre cabling including the complete CCTV & security system. Due to the nature of the machinery and other electrical distribution aspects required, DGE was also responsible for the Design & installation of a High Level Busduct system with tap offs to numerous Machines throughout the warehouse.

Techpark offers training in many trade areas, including arboriculture, automotive, construction, electrical, engineering, plumbing, refrigeration and more. Each of these different vocations required their own area with individual electrical needs to cater to each trade speciality.

Many of the areas required three phase machine installations. These machines also needed to be integrated into the security system, so DGE ensured controls were fitted to each machine.

Last, but certainly not least, the project also included the fit off of a small cafe that allowed students, teachers and tradies to get their caffeine fix!

The Solution

Coordinate and liaise with all parties involved, plus dedicated electrical expertise

As you can imagine, with a project of this size, there were a lot of different parties involved! So, DGE were vigilant in not only liaising with the client, but also communicating with the other trades involved to allow for a smooth delivery of results.

Much of the equipment needed to be transferred from the Otara site to the new Techpark site in Manukau. That meant constant monitoring and liaising to ensure each stage was coordinated. Each individual area needed to be completed and ready to receive their relevant machinery at the appropriate time.

There were numerous deadlines to meet throughout the project, so the DGE team worked to a strict timetable, ensuring we could adhere to the time pressures and deliver the completed project on time.

With new technology like bus ducts to work with, DGE brought a team equipped with exceptional skill and expertise to ensure a high quality installation.

The Outcome

Completion of all electrical aspects in a state of the art modern learning facility

Techpark’s end result is pretty impressive. It is an innovative space that will generate so many amazing graduates with a range of much needed skills and abilities.

For a team of expert minds, it was an exciting project for DGE to be a part of. This well designed project is a triumph. Students are excited to attend and their tutors have an amazing space in which to teach and impart their knowledge.

Compared to the old space, Techpark is light years ahead. MIT were absolutely wrapped with the work that DGE completed. Now they are able to empower future generations to develop the same vital skills that we hold here at DGE.

DGE is one of Auckland’s most highly regarded electrical engineering firms. Their skill, experience and workmanship is the main reason that MIT engaged their services. They knew they needed the best!
