Project Overview

As Auckland Airport embarks on one of the largest infrastructure transformations in its history, maintaining a seamless passenger experience during construction is critical.

To support the major upgrade of the international terminal check-in area expansion, DGE was engaged to design and build the new temporary Zone T Check-In facility. Working from a BECA performance specification and Auckland Airport design standards, DGE delivered a complete electrical design-and-build solution that would allow airport operations to continue during the next stage of redevelopment.

The project required a fully operational temporary check-in facility capable of supporting international travellers, airline staff, and airport operations, all within an extremely compressed delivery timeframe.

 

The Challenge

Zone T was far more than a standard electrical fit-out.

Located outside the international terminal, the facility needed to function as a fully operational check-in environment while integrating with existing airport infrastructure and maintaining Auckland Airport’s high standards for safety, reliability, and passenger experience.

The project presented several unique challenges:

  • A design-build programme with a three-month delivery window
  • Compliance with Auckland Airport design standards and performance specifications
  • Long-distance power supply requirements require precise engineering and protection calculations
  • Integration of a new-generation airport emergency lighting system being trialled within the facility
  • Complex installation requirements within a temporary structure
  • Coordination with multiple stakeholders, consultants, and service providers

With tight programme deadlines, the facility needed to be operational in time for Auckland Airport’s wider redevelopment programme to proceed.

 

The Solution

Working from a BECA performance specification and Auckland Airport design standards, DGE delivered a complete end-to-end electrical design-and-build solution all under one roof.

Beginning with detailed electrical engineering design, DGE’s team developed a full Building Information Modelling (BIM) solution, including 3D modelling, clash detection, construction documentation, and detailed coordination with other trades.

The facility’s temporary nature also created opportunities for value engineering. Working closely with Auckland Airport, DGE identified practical alternatives that maintained operational performance while delivering cost efficiencies where appropriate.

Throughout construction, ongoing design coordination meetings and stakeholder engagement ensured the project remained aligned with programme requirements and operational expectations.

The result was a highly coordinated delivery that combined:

  • Producer statements and certification

Delivering Under Pressure

From initial ground works through to operational handover, the facility was delivered within the tight programme timeline. Every stage required careful planning, coordination, and execution to ensure the airport could commence the next phase of its terminal redevelopment without delay.

The temporary structure itself introduced additional complexity. Unlike a conventional building, the inflated pavilion required specialised considerations around essential backup systems, equipment support, lighting installations, and cable management.

Despite these challenges, the project was delivered safely, efficiently, and to the high standards expected within one of New Zealand’s most critical transport infrastructure environments.

 

The Outcome

Zone T now provides Auckland Airport with the operational flexibility required to undertake significant upgrades to the existing international check-in area while maintaining passenger services.

The facility enables Auckland Airport to continue progressing its long-term vision of a modern, integrated terminal experience while supporting thousands of travellers every day.

For DGE, the project showcased the strength of its design-build capability and its ability to deliver complex infrastructure solutions under demanding conditions.

Most importantly, the project was completed safely, on programme, and to a quality standard that earned positive recognition from Auckland Airport and project stakeholders.
