Auckland International Airport: Arrivals Expansion

Explore

Auckland Airport’s arrivals expansion was a strategic infrastructure project designed to streamline logistics and support international terminal goods deliveries. The scope was an expanded arrivals hall, new truck dock, new screening area for inbound goods and non-passenger screening and critical interface upgrades, all delivered within one of New Zealand’s most high-security and operationally sensitive environments.

Built Environs selected DGE to deliver the full electrical services required for this project due to proven airport experience, safety-first approach, and track record of performance in live infrastructure environments.

The Challenge

Live terminal, tight security, and zero disruption.

Working within Auckland Airport’s terminal expansion zone posed complex challenges. The team was required to:

  • Operate within a live airside/landside boundary necessitating  strict protocols and safety requirements
  • Maintain passenger flow at all times
  • Coordinate closely with airport operations and other contractors
  • Deliver work within strict staging and deadline parameters

Every electrical installation had to meet aviation compliance and safety standards while keeping critical infrastructure live and operational.

Our Solution

DGE was responsible for the full delivery of electrical services across the new arrivals infrastructure:

  • Installation of truck dock and barrier arm systems for traffic management
  • Lighting design and installation, including emergency lighting
  • Integration with existing terminal systems
  • Works spanning both airside and landside infrastructure

Working to a pre-approved consultant design, our team executed the installation with precision, aligning with AKL’s safety and compliance standards while ensuring efficient service delivery within the agreed programme.

How We Delivered

DGE’s airport team brought deep understanding of airside rules, permit processes, and stakeholder management. Our approach included:

  • Coordination with AKL and Built Environs to ensure staging didn’t disrupt operations
  • Strict site safety planning and daily pre-starts
  • Specialist DGE team trained in the specific requirements to enable them to work airside
  • Understanding existing airport systems to ensure seamless integration
  • Maintaining continuous service for logistics operations during installation
  • Detailed project documentation and compliance reporting, including progress and completion communications

With every touchpoint aligned under our “One Team, One Solution” delivery model, the project moved forward smoothly from site establishment to final handover.

The Outcome

Delivered on time, with zero disruption.

The expansion was delivered over an 18-month period and completed to spec. DGE’s contribution ensured:

  • All systems powered and integrated
  • No disruption to airport operations
  • All compliance documentation submitted for final certification
  • Positive feedback from Built Environs and AKL stakeholders

The successful outcome further strengthened DGE’s standing as a trusted delivery partner in the aviation sector, ready to support future works at Auckland Airport.
