With a 10-hectare site to power and numerous buildings within that area, Fisher & Paykel needed a high powered electrical solution.
Which is why DGE was chosen for this massive undertaking.
With proven experience in technical high voltage work, we were the obvious choice to power the Fisher & Paykel site.
The team were tasked with decommissioning the existing high voltage power ring and installing a brand-new private high-voltage network. On paper, this seems like a straightforward task, but in practice, it was anything but!
The Challenge
Designing, building and implementing a private high voltage network
With a building to demolish, a new 15,000sqm premises to situate on the site and numerous other buildings planned for the future, not just any electrical solution would do!
It was all about creating a network for their state-of-the-art warehouse, office facilities and electronics workshop in the now, but also creating provisions for further buildings to be constructed on the same site in the future.
It was necessary for Fisher & Paykel to remain operational throughout the project. So, the coordination required to construct this new network while still powering half of the existing building and the new purpose-built premises, then decommissioning the old network was immense.
Add in the future scope of provisions for a further four buildings to be connected to the high voltage network we were installing and the project became out of scope for many NZ electrical engineers. Fortunately, DGE’s prior experience on large scale projects of this nature meant we were the perfect choice for the job.
The Scope
Powering the entire 10-hectare Fisher & Paykel site via high voltage
The scope of the project involved designing, installing and implementing a high voltage network for a 10-hectare site on Springs Road in Auckland. This included the installation of a massive 1.5MVA transformer with provisions for 4 future transformers to be installed at a later date.
This was not the initial plan, however. Initially, a low voltage solution was proposed. But, after consultation with the experts at DGE, we recommended the installation of a private high voltage network that would offer better control, significant savings and greater electrical capacity for the site.
When F & P selected this solution, it meant DGE were tasked with decommissioning the existing HV ring and installing a new private network. We installed one main ring unit for the new building, then ran a series of cables, measuring a whopping 350m, to a second unit that would supply power to the project’s future stages.
The Delivery
Coordination, care, attention and skill
The success of this project required careful planning and consideration of all the different aspects. We had to be agile and flexible throughout, as there were several unknowns. Armed only with concept drawings at the beginning, we facilitated the success of the entire project right from using our experienced team to present a certified design, to procurement of equipment and materials, implementation and installation.
Working with high voltage requires extra care, attention and skill; many electricians won’t undertake this work and will often contact experts like DGE to ensure a successful project outcome. Safety and correct practice are always our top priorities, along with client satisfaction. That’s why we worked to a carefully planned schedule for this project to ensure we would meet the necessary objectives and timelines.
The Outcome
A high voltage network to power current and future iterations of Fisher & Paykel
When Fisher & Paykel moved into their new building, they couldn’t keep the smiles off their faces. For the general team, it was the fact they were working in a state-of-the-art purpose built modern building, management enjoyed sustainability and cost saving benefits due to the Green Star rating and private high voltage network, and the stakeholders knew their site was future proofed and ready for advancement when the right time arose.
All in all, DGE created the ultimate high voltage solution for Fisher & Paykel, meeting every one of their needs – both current and future.
